SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN CHITTAGONG.
Solid waste management becomes a great problem in recent time. Rapidly
growing population is liable for producing large amount of solid wastes. To
develop an efficient SWM
system the existing scenario of solid waste of a city should be known
enable to find out the exact problems happening regarding disorder of
solid waste within the city. Chittagong city was known as the “cleanest city”
of Bangladesh due to its neatness and an overwhelming presence of green trees
and hilly areas. But now recently due to the presence of piles of refuses
dotting and improper waste management, the clean lines of the city has been
facing an acute decay.

are produced daily by the people. Low collection coverage, scarce transport
services, recycling and disposal and lack of suitable treatment, facilities are
responsible for unsatisfactory waste management, leading to air, water and land
pollution. Which putting people and the environment at risk. In such a
circumstance this study has intended to unfold the institutional dimensions of
solid waste management including the types & amount of wastes produced in
this city and to identify swm problems. A field survey had been conducted to
identify the recent scenario of swm system in Chittagong city area. It helped
to identify the problems regarding solid waste management system which helped
in this study to give some solicitation to improve the solid waste management
system of Chittagong.

existing waste management system. Their suggestion has been considered in the

has been found that total 122 tons of SW of different types are being generated
daily. Of the total quantity 45-55 percent is collected but the rest is left.
It is broadly estimated that between 10 to 15 percent of the total municipal
budget is used for SWM. The wastes which remains uncollected and dumped in open
area, street or drains, clogging the drainage system that creates grave
environmental decay and health risks. The collected waste is presently being disposed
of mainly in a low-lying area. Little amount of waste is being reclaimed or
salvaged for recycling according to its market value. Finally, this paper
suggests a safe and sustainable dumping site for environmental protection to
keep the city nice and healthy.
CCC collects 1357-ton waste daily. Collection efficiency is 70 percent of the
generated waste Management scenario in Chittagong Management method. Now I am

1.575 ton, Plastic 0.550 ton, Aluminum 0.027 ton, Steel 0.556 ton, Glass 2.050-ton
Total 4.758 ton. Which means Solid waste management system is working perfectly.
the end I just want to add that, Bangladesh is getting populated day by day.
More population, more waste, more pollution , more environment disadvantage. So
we have to cover the whole nation. Because environment is getting weak day by
day. we need to manage take action against it and walk towards to a clean
Bangladesh and a healthy Bangladesh. Thank you.
