In October of 2014, Disney decided to use workers who had an H-1B visa. An H-1B is used for companies that are looking to hire non-immigrant aliens because they cannot find from the US that is as qualified and trained as they need/want. The people they hire on H-1B are required to have a bachelor’s degree in the area of the field you are looking for. The H-1B visa gives the workers limited time of employment in the US to work. https://www.dol.gov/whd/immigration/h1b.htm)
In the article, it states that Disney laid off 850 American worked that were then replaced with H-1B visa workers. The workers that got laid off were required to train the H-1B workers for 90 days. The workers then explained that they were never told they need to have a certain amount of experience for their job and that the new workers they brought in did not experience any more than they were. They are saying that companies such as Disney are abusing the visa just so they can save money since you don’t have to pay them minimum wage, don’t have to provide benefits, and social security tax is waved for five years. The workers are saying that you are making 20% more by just hiring people on the H-1B visa.
I think that this article is interesting. I really done think that companies are saving that much money but using alien immigrants. I had to do a lot to understand what the H-1B actually did and what you had to do.( https://www.huffingtonpost.com/judy-frankel/insourcing-american-lose-_b_11173074.html)
