Did you know that the North American Free Trade Agreement or (NAFTA) supports over 14 million jobs in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. I believe that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is a necessary trade agreement because it eliminated tariffs, increased profit, and created more jobs than when NAFTA was not around. NAFTA also reduced government spending. It was signed into law on December 8, 1993 by Bill Clinton, but it had been an idea before he was even in office. When Ronald Reagan was president it had been a major idea. He and and the Canadian Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney made agreements to start a free trade agreement between the U.S. and Canada. George H. W. Bush was the president who really got it going through with Mexico’s President Salinas. Bush, Salinas, and Mulroney signed the treaty in 1992. There were some disadvantages when it comes to having NAFTA around. Small business and Mexican farmers lost jobs. NAFTA caused deterioration of Mexico’s environment and exploited Mexican workers near the border which led to lots of illegal immigrants coming into the U.S. NAFTA might be possible for excessive pollution in North America. The workers were not given labor rights or health benefits. Before NAFTA there wasn’t much job migration and now because of it there is more job migration and suppressed wages. Also because of NAFTA many manufacturing jobs were lost. People who want to get rid of NAFTA often ask if getting rid of it would bring more jobs back, but it wouldn’t. Donald Trump is one who threatens NAFTA ending especially if there aren’t any negotiations made between. When we did not have NAFTA oil and gas prices were higher because we got it from the middle east and there was higher taxes. NAFTA quadrupled trade between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. According to a Washington post article, after the treaty was signed wages increased in the U.S. by .17%, Canada by .96%, and Mexico by 1.3%. Lastly, NAFTA increased exports and benefited three major industries, agriculture, automotive, and healthcare. I think that having NAFTA around is better than not. The U.S. saved money and invested $452 billion in Mexico and Canada, it also made the trade go up in North America. Although some jobs were lost many were created and high tariffs were eliminated. NAFTA has created many opportunities for small businesses so they can grow especially in Latin-American countries. That is why I believe the pros outweigh the cons.
